4 Lessons I Learnt During My YTT

This November, I spent three weeks immersed in my 200-hour yoga teacher training at Vala House. It was one of the most challenging yet transformative experiences of my life. Here are three powerful lessons I took away:

1. The Power of Now

Yoga teaches us to be present and we can take this practice off of the mat and into our everyday lives.

In the first week, our group struggled to sit in stillness and meditate. I was used to meditating with mala beads and introduced them to the group and we rushed through the count, constantly wondering when the timer would go off after just five minutes.

By the second week, we began to embrace the practice. The beads became a comfort rather than a crutch and we could sit for 15 minutes with ease. In fact, by the time our instructor said, “gently open your eyes,” I could have kept going. By the third week, stillness felt natural, and 30 minutes of meditation became a space to simply be.

2. Yoga is More Than Poses

Exploring the history of yoga and its 8 limbs opened my eyes to the depth of this practice. Yoga is not just about flexibility or strength; it’s a lifelong journey of self-discovery, discipline and mindfulness.

3. Community is Everything

Training alongside people from all over the world reminded me of the power of connection. As well as how a passion for something can unite strangers. My fellow trainers became my sisters and we still constantly message throughout the day. Growth feels lighter when you’re supported by others.

4. Embrace Growth, Not Perfection

There’s no such thing as a “perfect” pose—it’s all about meeting yourself where you are. Towards the end of my training, my right foot was ready to give in; even an ice bath couldn’t save my aching foot. I couldn’t get into a certain pose, and I had to accept that I would have to modify my class. It was a humbling reminder to let go of expectations and practice compassion toward myself.

Would I do it again?

There is no doubt in my mind! While it was emotionally and physically challenging, the growth I found within myself is indescribable. I have never felt so connected to my mind, body and spirit since completing my YTT and integrating yoga into my everyday life.
